Working in the polar regions helped me realize how interconnected we all are and how our actions can impact others. I strongly believe citizen science is an important educational tool. Happywhale is a platform for gathering marine mammal photos from citizen scientists all over the world.

Antarctica is always exciting and one of the most unique experiences on the planet. There are albatrosses to be seen as we cross the Drake Passage with their huge wingspans up to 3.6 meters (12 feet) cruising effortlessly past us. And when we get to Antarctica, there are the penguins of course, sometimes thousands of them, busy breeding in the Austral summer.

I remember one sunny day when I was on a Zodiac cruise. I was sailing between the groups and icebergs. Suddenly we saw around 30 humpback whales feeding. There was no wind and very good visibility, so we could see blows of humpback whales everywhere. It was such a spectacular sight!
